The Nokia 6700 Slide is a unique slide phone which looks to bridge the gap between modern smart phones and the older, smaller styles of technology which we all know and are familiar with.

The Nokia 6700 Slide features a D pad navigation below its screen for quick and easy navigation along with a slide down, 1-9 hard keyboard for the more in depth tasks. All the usual smart phone applications can be found on the Nokia 6700 Slide too, with links to Facebook, Twitter, Nokia’s Ovi store and a web browser all available on the home page.

However, despite having all the practicalities that you would find on one of the latest mobile phones, trying to integrate them into a slide phone setting can cause some teething problems.

The 1-9 keypad can make typing long emails and text messages hard at times, something that is much easier on a smart phone, and the D pad can be hard to use without accidentally hitting the surrounding buttons. Web navigation too can be an issue thanks to the Nokia 6700 Slide’s slightly untidy D pad.

The vibration setting is also a common thorn in user’s sides, as its aggression means it is often quieter to keep the phone on ring.

As the Nokia 6700 Slide is mainly available on contract mobile phone deals, users can often end up getting a full smart phone for the same monthly cost as this attempted feature phone hybrid.

The Nokia X5 handset is one of Nokia’s newest models. Neatly packaged as a small square, with only the screen constantly visible, this compact new mobile phone has a flip down QWERTY keyboard for easy typing and a 5-megapixel camera, which includes an LED flash and 4x digital zoom.

As with most new mobile phones, there is a strong emphasis on the ability to play music and connect to social networking sites with the Nokia X5. The handset comes with a music player with the ability to play all major encoding formats, giving it much more versatility than many other handsets. Access to social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Hi5 and Twitter also comes built in to the phone.

However, there are several drawbacks to the Nokia X5. Firstly, there is no 3G capability, meaning that access to social networking sites can be slow and cumbersome when not connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Secondly, the built in memory to the new Nokia X5 is a measly 200 MB, which will quickly get filled up with just a handful of songs and photos. If you want to expand this internal memory then you will have no option but to buy a new memory card, as the phone’s microSD slot can accept memory cards of up to 32 GB.

Buying a 32 GB microSD card, though, will cost over £80, so it may be best to look out for mobile phone deals which include the expanded memory.

Article Content:
The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is a reasonably priced phone that features a 2.9-inch resistive screen that plays music and takes decent pictures.

The phone is slim it has a reliable strong feel about it, feeling weighty in the hand highlighting Nokia’s reputation as a maker of reliable and long-lasting handsets. Even the thin stylus gives off a robust impression.

The 5530 XpressMusic is first and foremost a music phone and you can upload your favourite songs using the Nokia PC Suite software. It comes complete with a 4 GB microSD card so there’s space to store about 1000 tracks. As with all the phones in the XpressMusic range, you can fiddle about with equaliser settings and you can create playlists. There’s also a 3.5 mm audio jack, so you can plug in any set of headphones.

The camera has 3.2 megapixels and takes above average photographs, with good sharpness and colour. Although there is no macro mode it comes with LED flash and digital zoom meaning that you can get in close and still take fairly detailed shots.

There are some downsides to this phone. It is almost impossible to type a text using your fingers; you need to use the stylus. There is no lanyard to attach the stylus to the phone meaning that it can easily be misplaced.

The dedicated camera shutter key is pointless as it is too stiff and you’re much better off using the key on the touchscreen. Similarly, the USB port cover is a nightmare to remove.

Have you ever been sitting in a cafe, playing around on the available WiFi network there, and had the sudden urge to just set up a chat room with everyone else in the establishment? Sounds like a good time to you? Well, Nokia agrees, and that’s why they’ve come up with Instant Community: a way to create and organize impromptu networks for chatting it up, and sharing your media.

The system is designed to make the Nokia N900 an ad-hoc WiFi connection point. From there, other devices can connect to that, in which turns them into yet another ad-hoc WiFi connection point. Basically, if there were enough people out there doing the same thing, you could potentially fill up an entire stadium with the instant chatting goodness, as each device acts as another repeater, sending the signal along.

As of right now, the initial app that’s creating all the stir of good news is one that allows for large group chatting, which also allows for users to send picture and video messages. The text-based messages would be pushed to the devices without a problem, but with the ad-hoc and multiple devices running on the Instant Community, there’s a lot of latency involved; so Nokia figured out a way to make sending those picture and video message easier: links. As of right now, Nokia’s N900 is getting all of the attention. At least, one’s running MeeGo, anyway. There’s talk that a Symbian device is running the goodness, too, so that opens up the door for quite a few Nokia-based devices out there to get in on the goodness. Unfortunately, Nokia still has a lot of room to axe this project, but we’ll hope that they greenlight it and we can get an official release date soon. Check out the video below.

Nokia N900 has just got a new software update today in UK. The update is version 1.2 (V10.2010.19-1), comes with several improvements including email client, new Facebook IM chat and support video calling. There are also changes in the system menu and Ovi Map with the new finger friendly user interface. With UK being the first country to get the update, Nokia is releasing the software update globally tomorrow (Wednesday).

Other than the good news on the software update, unfortunately Nokia announced that it has no plan, yet, to bring the MeeGo upgrade available for Nokia N900. Reason? According to Nokia, “It’s really about ensuring that you have the best possible experience designed for the features on your Nokia N900 device. Nokia realises this news may be a disappointment for some, rest assured that Nokia will continue to support the core Maemo software on your Nokia N900″

Article Content:
The latest mobile phones are very often too expensive for most of us and if you don’t want to get involved with contracts it can be frustrating trying to find a decent phone that doesn’t cost the earth on pay as you go. The Nokia 5800 Xpress has been around for a while now; the mobile phone reviews are all good. This product falls into the multifunctional touchscreen category of Nokia mobile phones and is fairly chunky, again looking like quite a masculine phone.

It is supplied with a lot of kit packed in, the music player is one of the key features with the 5800 and the memory card slot means you can store a significant amount of music to take on the move. Your Nokia 5800 can also be used with mapping software and has built in GPS, so if you only need occasional sat-nav functions you could find that this phone means you don’t need to purchase a separate device that sits unused for months on end. When you compare mobile phones this handset is clearly not quite in the iPhone league, however, neither does it have the massive iPhone price tag and what it does offer is well supported. There is a camera, which has good detail when the pictures are enlarged by transferring them to the PC, but not as much functionality as some of the other Nokia cameras. However, for a budget smartphone you are not going to go far wrong with the Nokia 5800 Xpress.

Samsung continues to surprise. While there’s been all sorts of rumors around the mill lately that Samsung would halt support of Nokia’s Symbian platform, all of that could be hogwash if an unnamed employee is to be believed. And while many considered the rumor of axing Symbian to be true, considering Samsung has their own Bada OS to focus on (plus future handsets featuring Android and Windows Phone 7), it seems that Samsung isn’t quite ready to pull the plug.

While there’s absolutely no information to provide regarding the handset, we do believe that Samsung does indeed have a device in the works. According to the employee, Samsung is going to release the handset by the end of the year, and it will feature Nokia’s Symbian Operating System. Will there be any kind of User Interface modifications, like Samsung’s proprietary TouchWiz UI? We don’t know, but we could probably count on it.

We’ll have to keep our ear close to the ground on this one, as we’re just as interested as anyone else to see what kind of hardware Samsung would put around a Symbian device. As soon as we hear anything else in regards to Samsung’s hidden Symbian device, we’ll be sure to pass it along. But, at least you know it’s (potentially) coming, right? And knowing is half the battle, so they say.

If you are happy with your existing provider, you can expand your contract and go for phone upgrades. Coming back to X6 features, SMS, MMS, Email and Instant Messaging are wonderful messaging options for X6 owner.
