The in-built digital camera, now a standard feature of most mobile phones, allows photos not only to be taken quickly and easily, but also transferred immediately to friends and uploaded to a PC for altering or printing.

You can quickly record memos to yourself using the audio recorder, or send a voicemail to someone else. Some smart phones can be used as video recorders and record an hour or more of HD video without the battery going flat.

MMS is used for multi-media messaging, and a mobile phone can be used to connect to a mail server for receiving and sending emails. The phone can also browse sites on the internet using a WAP or HTML browser. Many websites have versions specially adjusted, so that they display well on the small screen of a smart phone.

Mobile gaming apps are becoming increasingly sophisticated as users demand better entertainment with sounds, colours and stimulation, while gaming companies have been more than happy to oblige.

Mobile phones are now seen as portable computers, taking over the traditional role of PDAs in this respect. With features from TV and music player to bar-code reader and electronic wallet, mobile phones are going from strength to strength and becoming more and more flexible and indispensable in our lives.

Mobile phones have been in existence for several decades, although it is only in recent years that they have become so ubiquitous with the general public.

The technology that led to this explosion in usage was in place from the 1940s, and consisted of the ‘mobile rings’ that were used to coordinate emergency services over radio networks.

1G (First Generation) mobile phones started being marketed by Motorola in 1983 using analogue technology, far less reliable than the digital technology that predominates today. These phones were unwieldy and carried around in hard briefcases along with their enormous battery chargers. Apart from having less than an hour of talk time before having to recharge, they experienced frequent broken signals and cost a small fortune. Nevertheless, they were here to stay.

2G (Second Generation) mobile phones appeared in the early 1990s as the technology improved dramatically. These used the new and much improved digital technology, which was much quieter and much faster than its analogue predecessor. These technological improvements also drove the increasing miniaturisation of mobile phones so that they could be fitted snugly and conveniently into a pocket rather than needing a briefcase for carrying around.

Energy-efficiency also improved as increasingly small batteries were developed, which made them more popular with the public. Prices started to tumble as companies competed to provide value for money, and then the popularity of mobile phones with consumers started reaching epidemic proportions as efficiency, usability, entertainment value, communications and affordability came together into a dream package.

There is certainly no shortage of Android phones available on the market today. While most manufacturers try to obtain their competitive edge by using the latest hardware, LG decided to opt for affordability. Even though the LG Optimus One may be labelled “low end” and “cheap”, which implies that the phone is inferior, this phone is deceptively useful in spite of its comparatively modest hardware specs.

With only a 600MHz processor and 512MB of SDRAM it manages to run many apps very smoothly, even faster than some of the higher end phones. An unofficial update to Android, Gingerbread, should make the performance even better, whilst at the same time considerably reducing the battery consumption.

While the LG Optimus One cannot compete with the higher end Android phones such as the Motorola Atrix and HTC EVO 3D, it is certainly a great value for money and a very good choice for someone buying their first Android smartphone. Even though its touchscreen is capacitive, it still responds to a stylus as well as finger input.
