Today RIM has announced its BlackBerry App World 2.0 is out of beta and will start to push out the update notification for current BlackBerry App World user in the next few hours. The new version will support carrier / credit card billing support, BlackBerry ID and new section for application listing.

When we launched the beta just a few weeks ago, we were able to offer new views, and
carrier and credit card billing support. We also integrated BlackBerry ID as a new
way of tying BlackBerry customers with their use for easy device switching and
management.

*         Credit Card Payment Option
With the new BlackBerry App World, customers are able to purchase applications using
major credit cards, including Visa and MasterCard. Carrier billing may also be
supported by certain carriers.

*         Easier Application Discovery
BlackBerry App World adds new tabbed sections for various applications lists. Users
can horizontally swipe or scroll to quickly view the Top 25 Free Apps, Top 25 Paid
Apps and Top 25 Themes, as well as the Newest Apps and Recently Updated Apps.

QR barcode scanning is also supported, allowing users to scan a QR code associated
with an application from anywhere – the web, print ads, brochures, etc. BlackBerry
App World will quickly find the related application, and automatically open and
download its page.

*         BlackBerry ID
BlackBerry ID provides customers with a device-independent user identification (ID)
for BlackBerry App World. It enables credit card payments and allows customers to
seamlessly transfer their personal library of free and purchased apps when they
switch to a new BlackBerry smartphone.

The BlackBerry Bold 9700 is a BlackBerry mobile phone targeted at the consumer market as opposed to BlackBerry’s traditional business market. The BlackBerry Bold 9700, compared with older BlackBerry mobile phones, looks slimmer, with more attention paid to the media functions.

The BlackBerry Bold 9700 is 4.29 by 2.36 by 0.56 inches, and weighs 4.3 ounces. Its range of features include six hours of talk time, 19 days of standby battery life, a main display of 480 x 360 pixels measuring 2.44 inches and a camera with 3.2 megapixel resolution, flash, auto focus, image stabiliser and digital zoom. The multimedia features are video supporting MPEG4, H.263, H.264, DivX 4, DivX 5, XviD, WMV and flash video and a music player supporting MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WMA, and AMR files.

The mobile phone has a full QWERTY keyboard, BlackBerry browser, microUSB, Wi-Fi and 2.1 stereo Bluetooth.

The excellent email functions and the superlative battery life are among the BlackBerry Bold 9700’s best review points. The replacement of a rollerball in earlier BlackBerry mobile phones with an optical trackpad is very successful. Although the screen is not the largest available in smartphones, generally it is clear and sharp. The QWERTY keyboard is easy to use and highly responsive.

On the downside, the BlackBerry Bold 9700 is quite complicated in its display of menus, which can be somewhat confusing to navigate.

The majority of BlackBerry Bold 9700 deals offer free minutes, unlimited texts and a free handset.

Article Content:
Back before Mobile World Congress this year, one of the larger pre-conference announcements was that the largest wireless carrier in the United States, along with one of the most popular VoIP services on the Internet, would be launching a service that would make quite a few people happy. The addition of Skype on 3G smartphones, with the ability to make Skype calls over 3G was pretty huge. Before, it was limited to just WiFi. But, as expected, it wasn’t for every phone out there: just BlackBerry and Android devices to start. But it looks like all of that is about to change.

Verizon Wireless has just announced that Skype is coming to more handsets. They’ve put a “by the end of the year” time stamp on the deal, so that gives both companies plenty of time to shove the service onto handsets. While it’s obviously going to be available on upcoming Android and BlackBerry releases, we should also expect to see it on multimedia phones, too.

Our big question, and perhaps biggest concern, is whether or not the Skype application will come pre-loaded on those multimedia phones. While Skype is a great service, it’s not going to fit everyone’s style, nor will they want another application on their handset that they don’t use. We’ll have to see what happens. How many of you out there have been using Skype on your handsets already?

Press Release:

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Skype mobile™ from Verizon Wireless gives customers another easy way to stay connected with friends, family and colleagues all over the world. Available only from Verizon Wireless, Skype mobile is an easy-to-download and free app for 3G Smartphone customers.

Skype mobile from Verizon Wireless, currently available on 12 different smartphones, will expand to more handsets later this year, including several 3G Multimedia phones. In addition to Spanish, Skype mobile will also be available in Korean and simple Chinese, providing more flexibility and the ability to communicate with people around the world. Skype mobile customers will soon see an enhanced user interface with a drop-down menu with flags for international dialing.

“Skype mobile from Verizon Wireless not only takes advantage of the reliability and breadth of our wireless network, but it’s also proving to be a great option for military families with loved ones stationed overseas, people with relatives in Asia or South America, and businesses with a global presence,” said Jennifer Byrne, executive director of business development, Verizon Wireless. “And, with the World Cup starting soon, there’s no better way to talk or chat about the action with far-flung fans and family than Skype mobile.”

Skype-to-Skype calls and chats are unlimited and free when initiated with Skype mobile from a Verizon Wireless 3G Smartphone with a data plan to any of the more than 580 million Skype users anywhere in the world. The calls run on the United States’ largest and most reliable wireless voice network, providing outstanding call quality and allowing the app to work with traditional voice products, including Bluetooth® headsets. Skype mobile calls made to domestic landline and wireless numbers use minutes from customers’ voice plans, and Skype mobile calls to international numbers are charged Skype’s low, international rates.

Customers with DROID smartphones can download the highly rated app from the Verizon Channel in Android Market™, and customers with certain BlackBerry® smartphones can download it from www.skype.com/vzw using their smartphones’ browsers. Customers can also text “SKYPE” to 2255 to get a message with the link to download Skype mobile.

For more info on Skype mobile, visit www.verizonwireless.com/skypemobile. For more information about Verizon Wireless products and services, visit a Verizon Wireless Communications Store, call 1-800-2 JOIN IN or go to www.verizonwireless.com.

Article Content:
One of the (many) benefits of GSM, is the fact you simply need a SIM card to make your device work. With a little work, you can make any GSM-based handset “unlocked,” and therefore capable of working on any other GSM carrier out there in the world. In the case of the BlackBerry Storm, which is a world phone from Verizon Wireless here in the States, you are able to primarily find access to CDMA-based networks, but thanks to the partnership with Vodafone, can also use a SIM card to access networks while out and about. Another option, of course, is to unlock the Storm and use it on T-Mobile USA. Apparently, T-Mobile doesn’t like that plan anymore.

Courtesy of CrackBerry forums, it’s looking like the fourth largest wireless carrier has gone ahead and put the clamp down on unlocked BlackBerry Storm devices. According to several reports, the devices aren’t functioning properly at all: many have said that they have no data connection, while calling customer service has resulted in obtaining no help at all. Others have even heard, “Your device is not supported,” even before they can connect to anyone to talk to.

All of this is coming from the customers, but with so many of them independently verifying the same situation, it’s definitely something that’s got us scratching our head in confusion. Why T-Mobile would lock down the usage of the Storm on their network is beyond us: after all, it’s not like it’s the only device being utilized on their network which doesn’t come from T-Mobile. We’ll keep our eye on this one. And, if you’ve got a Storm and you’re running around on T-Mobile’s network, let us know your own experiences.

Article Content:
It was only just a few years ago that, with photos or video of a new, officially unannounced product hitting the Internet, the whole world seemed to go abuzz. Now though, it just feels like it’s second nature, and expected. Take for example the BlackBerry 9670, the clamshell handset from Research In Motion that hasn’t been officially announced by any means, but that’s shown up so much on the Internet, it might as well be a fully released handset.

The BlackBerry 9670 follows in the lineage of the BlackBerry Pearl Flip, as it’s designed like a flip-phone, but still packs in all the traditional BlackBerry features. You’ll find a full QWERTY keyboard, and a screen that’s just big enough to get the job done. The resolution on this one is reportedly 480×360, so it won’t blow your mind or anything. You’ll also get a screen on the top-half of the device, so that when it’s closed, you can still get your notifications. Of course, the main stay of the video is probably OS 6, which was just announced not too long ago. The version of the upcoming mobile Operating System (OS) from Waterloo on the 9670 is very early, so even if it does look good now, it will probably see some overall changes by the time it launches.

We’re still hearing that it’s a CDMA-based device, and rumor has it that Sprint is going to be the one picking it up here in the States. Considering Sprint is still looking for devices that stand-out amongst the crowd and competition, getting a giant BlackBerry flip-phone is one way to do that. No word, however, on when RIM will get around to telling us this phone is real, but as soon as it happens, be sure to get back here ASAP as we’ll bring you all the juicy details.

The BlackBerry Tour 9630 is for Verizon subscribers who have long-awaited their very own BlackBerry smartphone. Combining some of the best features of other BlackBerry mobile phones with its own unique additions, the Tour 9630 is a solid performer in a really attractive package.

Pros

Users don’t always consider call quality a top priority when they compare mobile phones, but the Tour 9630 has audio so solid it’s worth mentioning. Even in Bluetooth mode, sound is clear, and the long battery life allows for up to six hours of non-stop chatter.

Internal memory is an impressive 256MB, powerful enough to support a wide range of features. Expandable memory ports boost memory upwards of 8GB.

The multi-media features are praiseworthy: a 3.15 megapixel camera with LED flash, autofocus, and video; a variety of video playback options for the high resolution screen; a simple, easy to use music player; a 3.5mm headphone jack; and good web browsing function.

Cons

The QWERTY keyboard on the Tour 9630 is curiously harder to use than those of other BlackBerry mobile phones. Keys are crowded close together, and typing accuracy is rather difficult.

A glaring omission on the Tour 9630 is Wi-Fi connectivity, a feature that is fast becoming standard on the latest mobile phones.

The web browser has a distracting zoom function that makes text huge and images tiny. Following links is a time-intensive process that forces users to access a menu option before activating a link.

Conclusion

As a consumer offering, the Tour 9630 is sure to please Verizon subscribers in search of contract mobile phones with great call quality, loads of multi-media features, and adequate web browsing. If Wi-Fi and typing accuracy are necessities, then perform further research by checking mobile phone reviews on other Blackberry models. Mobile phone news sites can also be a valuable resource to aid you in this task.

If you are in the market for a new contract mobile phone after comparing mobile phone reviews you may find yourself opting for a Blackberry Bold 9700 deal. The Bold 9700 has some of the latest mobile phone technology with a vast number of useful functions such as Wi-Fi for those who want to connect to the internet while on the move and 3G high speed downloads making surfing on the go fast and efficient. Other functions available on the Blackberry Bold 9700 are GPS, making trips out of town easier to navigate and Bluetooth, which is good for those needing a hands free option.

The Bold 9700 has a stylish slim line design, a good battery life when compared with other mobile phones and a sharp, clear screen making it easier to see at a glance with no eye strain. The keyboard on the Bold 9700 is very easy to pilot and the rollerball from previous models has been replaced with an optical trackpad. The camera on this phone is excellent for on-the-go pictures and boasts an autofocus function not found on many similar models. Although picture quality is not of a professional standard, it is very good as far as mobile phones go.

There are very few negative points to the Bold 9700. The menus may be a little confusing for those who are new to using BlackBerrys, and sound quality on the music player is only fairly average but again compared with other mobile phones the Bold 9700 holds its own.

In terms of weight, there is not much difference between the Blackberry 8520 Curve and Nokia 5800 Xpress Music, as the former weighs 106 grams, while the latter stands at 109 grams. So, it is merely 3 grams you see! However, certain other specifications do vary to a noticeable extent. Nevertheless, both the handsets have carved a niche for themselves in the market.

To begin with, the Blackberry 8520 Curve, which by the way, I own too, is blessed with a 2 mega pixel camera. Though I find the quality that it delivers to be of good standard, many people beg to differ and prefer the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music, that comes with a 3.15 mega pixel camera instead. The former makes up for this with its gigantic internal memory, that amounts to 256MB. On the other hand, the aforementioned Nokia handset is embellished with 81MB of storage.

When it comes to connectivity or GPRS, for that matter, there is a huge difference. While the first handset supports Class 10 GPRS, the second one supports Class 32. And yes, while the Blackberry handset is a 2G phone, the Nokia gizmo is a 3G one. Factually, the former supports class 10 EDGE, while the latter is compatible with Class 32 EDGE and on top of that, it supports HSDPA as well.

Talking of the screen size, while the former boasts of a 2.46 inches screen, the latter sports a 3.2 inches one. Moreover, the screen type differs too. While the Blackberry 8520 Curve has a TFT screen, the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music comes with a TFT resistive touchscreen. What I like about the Nokia handset is that its screen can display up to 16 million colours, though I am loyal to my Blackberry gizmo, though its screen has the potential to display up to 65K colours only.

Music being the forte of Xpress music phones, there is a major difference between the Blackberry 8520 Curve and the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music, in this context. While both the handsets offer an almost similar music player, the latter has a much better sound output. Moreover, the Nokia phone has a battery that lasts longer than the battery of the Blackberry gadget, so it is obvious that it allows the users to play music for a much longer duration.
