From a technical perspective, broadband references a “broad” bandwidth, which is a range of frequencies used to transfer data.  The more “broad” this band is, the more capable it is of carrying large amounts of data.  With early use in radio, the narrowest bandwidths could simply carry Morse code, while broader bands could carry speech, with the broadest of bandwidths being necessary to carry music at an acceptable quality.  While original uses of the term were focused around radio transmission, the term has come to represent other means of high rate data transfers.

Broadband refers to modern, high speed internet connections suitable for delivering rich content, and in-depth media far beyond the capabilities of traditional dial up services.  Content such as images, video, and audio can not only be downloaded quickly on a modern broadband connection, they can be streamed, or downloaded on the fly, being played and downloaded simultaneously.  Varying levels of broadband services exist, at varying levels of potency and pricing, all with their unique niche that make them suitable for individual customers with individual internet access, and data transfer capability needs. 

As a whole, “broadband” is relative to the timeframe that it is mentioned in.  Much like how early radio broadband was simply the transfer of voice as opposed to Morse code, modern mobile broadband has exceeded the capabilities of early broadband internet nearly 100 fold.  Today, it simply represents modern internet service, both in home and over mobile networks.
