This is definitely a bold move from the United State’s second-largest wireless carrier. And, we’ve got to give them credit: at least they’re officially confirming that the network congestion in New York has reached a ridiculous peak, and the only way they see that can fix the situation is to offer some other means for folks to consume their data. Sure, AT&T’s network is definitely scorned in New York, but we’d rather see AT&T build up their network, instead of doing something else like offer up free WiFi.
AT&T today announced plans to set up a major WiFi hotspot near the Times Square area of New York City. The hotspot itself is located near 7th avenue, between 45th and 47th streets, and if you find yourself near it and on a smartphone with the WiFi option turned on, your phone will automatically switch over to the WiFi connection. Of course, if you don’t want to be on it, you’ll be able to disconnect. According to Mike Maus, who manages AT&T’s New York network, the addition of WiFi is due to the “very large data off-load in a venue where traditionally data would go over our old voice and data network.”
Again, we like to see that AT&T is doing something to fix the solution, and even more so that they’re acknowledging a situation is happening at all, but this just doesn’t feel like it’s a step in the right direction. Unless, of course, this is just a means to an end, where AT&T is still swiftly planning on revamping their towers, and strengthening their network. We’ll just have to keep waiting.
